Berhampur, aptly named as the Silk City of Odisha, is on the verge of a big urban and economic transformation. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has announced an elaborate plan to turn Berhampur into “Greater Berhampur City” as part of a decisive push towards balanced regional development. A multi-crore investment to develop the region’s infrastructure, lifestyle and human capital has resulted in plans for urbanisation of southern Odisha.

Creating Connectivity: ₹6,000 Crore Economic Corridor & Local Roads

Central to CM Majhi’s announcement is a ₹6,000 crore project to develop the Berhampur-Jeypore road as six-lane modern highway. It is to serve as a powerful economic corridor with enhanced connectivity between major commercial hubs in southern Odisha and improved trade fluidity through this critical infrastructure upgrade.

Acknowledging that the growth of a region begins from the ground level, the state has also approved ₹52.17 crore for the immediate construction of 10 major urban roads in Berhampur and surrounding areas. The investments in these select projects will aim to cut traffic jams in half, relieve congestion for everyday commuters, and provide a radical enhancement of the “Ease of Living” experience.

Expanding Borders and Enhancing Lifestyles

In order to keep pace with the growing urbanisation, the state government has formally initiated setting up of Greater Berhampur. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been directed for inclusion of surrounding rural and semi-urban pockets within the core municipal framework. Such structural expansion will ensure that civic amenities, planned housing and sanitation infrastructure grow uniformly in the region.

In addition, in a bid to promote old food culture of Berhampur the administration has decided to create Food Streets at several places under the Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC). These will be clean, organized zones that would not just uplift the colorful street food landscape of the city but also present better public health parameters and bring commerce in a more organized manner within these spaces for local vendors.

Revolutionizing Education and Empowering Youth

Infrastructure, however, is only a small piece of Chief Minister Majhi’s grand vision; the main focus is on humans, achieved through sweeping educational reforms. Given the vital imperative for quality schooling, the Odisha government has earmarked a historic outlay of more than ₹31,000 crore for the primary level in this budget.

Following are the major education highlights of transformation plan:

  • Unified Education Board: To consolidate the secondary and higher secondary education boards to make administration more efficient, for better quality of academics.
  • Massive Teacher Recruitment: In consonance to fill educator deficits across classrooms, the state will generate 45,000 new instructor positions in a duration of three years.
  • Free Textbooks: To relieve financial burden on families and ensure that every child has access to learn, students up to Class X will receive textbooks free of cost • Starting from the next academic session
  • Model Schools — The Godabarish Mishra Model Primary School Scheme seeks to create model primary schools for modern learning at panchayat level so as to uplift the rural foundation.

An auspicious future ahead for Southern Odisha

While closing connectivity gaps, beautifying urban spaces, promoting local delicacies and making heavy investments in the education of future generations; the Odisha government is building an inclusive growth story. With the Greater Berhampur plan in the making, Silk City is set to emerge as model city of modern and progressive town planning for eastern India.
